Residents warned as violent crimes increase

Police have noted an increase in house robberies, truck and carjackings, business robberies and armed robberies.

BRIGHTON Beach police are warning residents to be extra vigilant after observing an increase in violent crimes.

House robberies, truck and carjackings, business robberies and armed robberies usually committed while armed with firearms as a preferred weapon of choice is concerning to police.

Communications officer of the Brighton Beach SAPS, Captain Louise le Roux, said these types of violent crimes are committed both during the day, evenings and after 02:00.

Brighton Beach SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit member, Constable Tamara Small, urges residents to report those in unlawful possessions of firearms.

“Perpetrators act either in isolation or in groups of from about two to six people, with vehicles used when fleeing the scene. Occasionally, perpetrators are on foot.
We call for community cooperation to report those who are in possession of illegal firearms and reporting those licensed gun owners who handle their firearms in an unsafe or negligent manner.

“It is important to store all firearms safely when not in use,” said Le Roux.
Police further advised that putting a firearm out of sight or out of reach is not safe storage and not enough to prevent use by children or unauthorised persons.

“When storing your firearm ensure that it is unloaded. Ensure that the keys or combination to your room or safe is out of reach of children and unauthorised users.
“Do not let your firearm lie in your handbag, on top of a cupboard, within a drawer, under a bed mattress or pillow when not under your immediate control,” added Le Roux.
