3 ways to stay on trend this Durban July

According to Durban's fashion icon, Kathrin Kidger, staying on trend for this Durban July's theme has never been easier.

WANT to slay at this year’s Durban July but don’t know how to accurately interpret the theme? Allow us to take care of the final touches as we share some of the beauty and fashion items you can bloom in for race day.

Whether you keep it elegant and classic or try this year’s fashion theme: SHOW ME THE HONEY, be sure that the masses will be drawn in and the fashion police will be on the lookout for all the misses.

According to fashion icon Kathrin Kidger, “Tapping into this year’s theme has never been easier. There will always be those that take direct inspiration from bees, honeycombs and tones of gold, but it’s so important to keep things current, fresh and add only a touch of the literal.”

Kidger created three looks to inspire and direct some of our local fashionistas down the correct avenue.

“I think, in this economy, looking at our existing wardrobes and how we can tailor, customise or invigorate previous pieces is paramount. Florals are a good place to start. So if golden, metallic, ’honey-like’ tones are not for you, then take inspiration from a floral dress, scarf or accessory you already have in the cupboard and think about adding a bee broach or hexagon(honeycomb)-shaped detail to the overall look,” she added.

Kidger created three on-trend looks that people could use as inspiration this Durban July:

1. Honeycomb

The fashion icon believes texture is paramount in any hive. From honeycomb-shaped hexagons to silky satins emanating honey and fabrics with sheen, combining these finishes is a subtle nod to the theme.

2. Inspiration from the bloom-food of bees

“Florals and prints, that are strongly associated with the life and food source of bees are brilliant for this theme,” said Kidger. “For those wanting to upcycle, then blooms are for you! Find an existing dress in a beautiful floral and own the day.”

3. Bees

According to Kidger, interpreting the theme by using the colours of bees and their world as inspiration is perfect! Think black-and-yellow or tones of honey (metallics).

Kidger advises everyone to stay true to themselves while attempting to be fashion forward, as well as to have fun and think outside the box when creating their unique Durban July designs.
