‘Only One Earth’ was the slogan for the 1972 Stockholm Conference that put sustainable development on the global agenda and led to the establishment of the UN Environment Programme and World Environment Day. Fifty years later, our reliance on this beautiful blue planet, and the stresses we place upon it, are more evident than ever. Adopting #OnlyOneEarth as the motto for World Environment Day 2022 emphasizes that time is running out to bring people and nature back into balance,” reads the site.

According to the South African Government website, National Environment Month is celebrated as the government and captains of industry raise awareness on environmental issues, challenging the community to become agents for change.

It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1972, and was first celebrated in 1974, with a view to deepening environmental awareness and addressing concerns such as the depletion of the ozone layer, toxic chemicals, desertification, and global warming,” reads the site.
