PHOTOS: Floods leave path of destruction

Residents are not only facing severe weather conditions, but also electricity outages.

RESIDENTS are urged to remain on high alert and to stay indoors after the devastating, heavy rainfall continues a destructive path of flooding and mudslides, forcing residents to flee their homes in some areas.

Evacuations have been under-way since yesterday, with residents living in Merebank fleeing after homes and vehicles were submerged. Community leader in the Merebank area, Yusuf Vawda, said evacuations at homes near the canal have been continuing as the area becomes more volatile.

Melissa Welgemoed, who had been assisting ward councilor Zoe Solomon in the Bluff area, said electricity, as well as the cellphone towers are down, and suggested that residents make provision until the municipality can get through to any faults and outages reported.

“The cellphone towers for Cell C, Telkom and MTN will only provide service until the battery allows. Residents should be vigilant of their surroundings and minimise their movements on roads. Most parts of Bluff have been left in darkness, with no electricity and not much signal for cellphones. We have teams assisting with fallen trees, and a team is currently on Edwin Swales assisting with a bakkie that became submerged. There are volunteers with a brush-cutter, cutting trees and clearing collapsed roadways. Residents who can, should stay indoors so that emergency personnel and volunteers can assist those who need help,” said Welgemoed.

Schools have also been closed due to the heavy rainfall.
