Mowat Park clean up

Mowat Park High School learners clean up the Montclair area in hopes of regaining their schools' reputation.

IT takes courage to realise your mistakes and want to rectify them. Learners of Mowat Park High School, led by the Learner Leader Initiative, organised a community clean-up on Tuesday, March 1.

Learners saw that the matric class of last year left a bad picture in the community after the incident, where the girls damaged people’s cars by jumping on them.

These learners swore they will not do the same during their matric year, which is why they came up with this initiative. To take responsibility for how other learners behaved, and clean up their mess.

Avela Mzimela, who is part of the Learner Leader Initiative, said the initiative was for the school led by the learners to restore the reputation of the school.

“Our school has a bad reputation, especially after the incident that occurred last year. We took it upon ourselves to make the change, no matter how little it is. We got some good responses from some members of the community, and we made our pledges to them. That during our time we will not let what happened, happen again,” Avela said.

These young women show so much passion, and willingness to help the school regain its reputation. Sqobile Buthelezi who is also part of the Leaner Leader Initiative, said teachers install values that will help them throughout their adult life.

“We are always given tools or knowledge that will help us even outside the school gates. With this initiative, we just want to show the community that it is only a handful who chose to be rebels. Most of the learners take what is embedded in us by our teachers and put it to good use,” said Sqobile.
