THE Wentworth SAPS Victim Friendly Centre received a consignment of blankets, educational literature and shoes gifted during a collaboration fundraiser from several educational institutes throughout Durban. The consignment of items was handed over to Jennifer Gomes, centre manager, and Wendy Augustine, the centre’s trauma counsellor, last week.

Arnav Dasrath, president of Interact at Eden College, together with his committee, spearheaded the initiative throughout last year. The project was inspired by Mandela Day and the spirit of passing it forward. Dasrath and Interact collaborated with two Durban schools, Maris Stella and Crawford La Lucia, to increase the impact of the project which included collecting blankets and knitting squares to be donated to those in need.

More than a hundred blankets were collected, which was a testament to the power of collaboration and accumulative endeavours for a greater cause. To add to the donations, a ‘Pass it forward’ shoe drive and book collection was held to collect second hand shoes from all the matriculants of Eden College at the end of 2021, as well as learners from Erica Primary School in Chatsworth.

Books which were in good condition were donated by various people, while Dasrath and his committee worked tirelessly and managed to collect 81 pairs of school shoes to be donated to those less fortunate during the 2022 academic year.

Johnston Webber, who is the president of the Rotary Club of Durban, was actively involved in the school-based initiatives. Facilitators at the Eden College, Phyllis Welsh and Lee Gerber, vowed to mentor the learners on an ongoing basis to practice goodwill toward others following the project.
