Injured monkey euthanised

Vervet monkey sustained severe injuries and had to be put down.

A Brighton Beach resident is thankful to members of the local organisation, Centre for rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow), who reacted to her call for help after she found a badly injured baby vervet monkey in her yard, last week.

Claudine Alexander said she went outside at about 9:00 to hang up her washing when she spotted the monkey on the bench next to her dryer.

“at first I stepped back and my first thoughts were ‘where is his mom and the rest of his troop?’ since there were no other monkeys in sight, I took a closer look. He seemed very uneasy as his fur was wet at the back. As I got closer, I noticed that he was drenched in blood,” she said.

Claudine said she knew she had to help the distressed animal.

“I ran inside to try and get a container and towel to see if I can catch him. By the time I came around the corner, I assumed it was the alpha male of the pack. I quickly grabbed the baby and went inside. I phoned a vet and was referred to Crow.

“They were excellent and came to collect him soon after. I was instructed to keep the guy conscious until they arrived. I gave him some water with a syringe,” she said.

The monkey was taken to Crow, but had to, unfortunately, be euthanised due to the extent of his injuries

“I was told that his injuries were severe and that he had a deep spinal cord injury.

It could not be determined as to how the monkey got injured,” she said.

Claudine said she will make a donation to Crow as a token of appreciation for the work that they are involved in, and their dedication to saving wildlife.
