Dig deep- Volunteer at Durban Botanic Gardens

From planting and permaculture to butterflies and orchids, there's plenty for volunteers to tackle.

THE Durban Botanic Gardens is calling on the community to dig deep and volunteer. There are plenty of opportunities for Durbanites to get involved through the Collections & Horticulture Programme.

Durban Botanic Gardens said there is a range of hands-on volunteer work for the community to tackle. This includes annual bedding planting, permaculture food gardening, working in the butterfly garden, orchid collection, indigenous plant collections, landscape maintenance and development.

The work is different every week as the season progresses.

“We are looking for enthusiastic green-minded individuals to work with our team of gardeners to help maintain and further the beauty of our Botanic Gardens (est. back in 1849). Volunteers will experience all types of duties, from garden maintenance to a range of open projects in the Gardens. Responsibilities include weeding, mulching, planting and plant removal, grooming of paths, light pruning to maintain plant health, perennial plant care including deadheading and division, watering and fertilizing, and basic plant labelling and inventory,” said Botanic Gardens.
