Martial arts classes aim to keep children focused

Classes are aimed at people aged six years and older and largely benefit the younger children in fitness, self-confidence and discipline.

HELPING children from as young as six to focus and believe in themselves,  Sensei Shaun Miln from Funakoshi Karate International South Africa, situated in Bluff, is encouraging parents and children to motivate each other to keep fit.

Striving to steer children away from negative traits by instilling in them the discipline and self-confidence that teaching martial arts and karate ensures, Miln said the syllabus his team has built enables those in his programmes to develop confidence and leadership skills, while they learn to work as a team and to recognise that everyone has something to offer in a team so as to make it the best possible team it can be.

“The classes are aimed at people aged six years and older and largely benefit the younger children in fitness, self-confidence and discipline. Adults benefit from the effects of being fitness, which in turn lowers their heart rate and blood pressure and improves their cardiovascular health,” said Miln.

The 53-year-old instructor hosts classes at his dojo, situated on the corner of Assembly and Brighton Road, and has been an instructor since 1988. Being 35 years in his game, has allowed him to obtain his KZN colours in 1995 and saw him participating in an international tournament in 2019.

Karate standards high at grading despite challenges

“2016 was a highlight where I competed against countries such as Germany, New Zealand, Australia and Belgium. Miln added that since the schools had been back to full capacity, he received many requests from families wanting to re-join classes and get fit. “We urge people to join. There are no fitness requirements or restrictions. We also embark on various activities such as beach training, inter-club tournaments and fitness challenges. “Parents can encourage their children if they feel that they lack self-confidence or discipline families are encouraged to join as they can challenge each other and it creates a unique bond,” he added.
