Celebrate unsung heroes on World NGO Day

Commemorate World NGO day by becoming aware of the many NGOs offering crucial services and support in your area and consider offering your resources, time or donations to assist in the work they do.

EACH year World NGO Day is celebrated on February 27. This is an international day dedicated to recognise, celebrate and honour all non-governmental and non-profit organisations.

The Order of St John in Durban is the oldest non-profit organisation in the world. It promotes physical, mental and spiritual well-being in more than 40 countries.

The NGO delivers its charitable activities through local St John Ambulance organisations and their St John Eye Care Clinics, there are clinics in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

St John South Africa offers first aid and lifesaving skills training, eye care, ambulance services, medical supplies and facilitates community initiatives. St John, who has been active in South Africa for the past 130 years, recognised that e-learning is vitally important to the transformation of the healthcare sector.

Each Year, St John organisations train more than two million people in first aid and other health care activities. Worldwide, they treat more than 1.2 million and reach more than 2.5 million beneficiaries with their services.

The charity’s Latin formal motto is translated as ‘for the faith and in the service of humanity’, updated to meaning ‘Here for Good’
