Meet the new station commander at Wentworth police station

Although she has an open door policy, she prefers the community to make an appointment to see her.

THE newly appointed station commander at Wentworth police station is settled and ready to serve the community.

Colonel Sinayo Mtshali took over the reigns on Tuesday, February 1, following Colonel Willem van Zyl’s retirement at the end of December 2021. Mtshali believes her leadership skills, together with working with the community will challenge the crime ridden topography of the area.

“With a positive mindset, one will get positive change. However, change is a process, it cannot be achieved overnight. We will have to take one step at a time in addressing issues. This will be achieved through working together because as the police, we cannot work in isolation. I strongly believe in forging good relationships with the community to address issues. In most cases, the community is the eyes and ears on the ground and therefore, we need their collaboration. We also intend on working together with the CPF, security companies, religious institutions, social developments and other stakeholders including law enforcement departments like the Metro Police,” she said.

Mtshali joined the force in 1989 and has worked at Montclair and Isipingo police stations. In May last year, she was seconded to work at Bhekithemba police station in Umlazi as an acting station commander.

Before that, she headed the Vispol Unit as the commander at Brighton Beach police station which she joined in 2005. She has a strong stance against drugs and believes that educating the public, especially the youth, about social issues will assist in changing and uplifting themselves.

“Even though the station is heavily under resourced, one has to use what is at their disposal. If one component is in need more than the other, then we will pull from that to ensure that we deliver services and vice versa.

“I’m always preaching team work because working together makes us stronger and gets the job done. SAPS as a whole has zero tolerance to corruption and so for documents that go missing, I urge those with information to come forward to make a report and the matter will be investigated to get to the root of the problem,” she said.
