Provincial police operations continue on a high note

Over 1 000 suspects were arrested for numerous crimes in the province in an operation conducted from Monday, January 31, to Monday, February 7.

MORE police visibility can be expected by residents as officers are keen on ridding the province of crime. This is according to the KZN police branch which has vowed to remain on high alert as operations to eradicate crime are in full swing.

In the latest crime sweep report, a total of 1 168 suspects were arrested for numerous crimes in the province. This operation was conducted from Monday, January 31, to Monday, February 7.

“Large quantities of liquor and weapons were seized by police. Various drugs such as cocaine, mandrax, heroin, crystal meth as well as other drugs were also recovered.

“The police seized 31 vehicles during the weekly operations. Some of the vehicles were robbed or stolen from the lawful owners and others were involved in a commission of crime. The suspects appeared at their respective magistrate’s courts across the province,” said spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

Arrests in numbers:

  • Five were arrested for malicious damage to property
  • 20 for attempted murder
  • 27 for burglaries
  • 28 for sexual offences as well as other crimes
  • 36 suspects were arrested for murder
  • 49 illegal firearms were seized
  • 56 for theft
  • 58 for robberies
  • 81 for liquor-related offences
  • 134 for drug-related offences
  • 247 for assaults
  • 322 rounds of ammunition were seized
