Clairwood residents take back their area

The association's president, Mervyn Reddy, said they intend on meeting regularly with the ward councillor to see these pressing matters resolved.

WARD 32 residents are reclaiming their beloved area by taking a stand against illegal activities.

The Clairwood Ratepayers and Residents’ Association (CRRA) held a meeting at the Yuvak Arya-Samaj Temple Hall in Cherry Road, Clairwood on Thursday, February 10.

Many residents and stakeholders attended to voice their concerns and frustrations to ward 32 councillor, Protas Mngonyama. The association’s president, Mervyn Reddy, said they intend on meeting regularly to see these pressing matters resolved.

“At the meeting, we raised issues of the illegal influx of trucks and trucking companies, the lack of law enforcement, and other service delivery issues.

“The councillor pledged his support to assist residents with the current issues, more especially those raised by the association for decades. We want to see the restoration of Clairwood’s residential status,” he said.

He added that Mngonyama told residents and stakeholders to stay firm and not abandon their properties because Clairwood is still zoned as a special residential area. The councillor also addressed the concerns of illegal electricity connections and assured attendees that the matter is currently being dealt with.

“We discussed complex issues plaguing Clairwood at the meeting. In as much as the issues are intricate, we were able to identify that most of the problems were caused by trucks and illegal businesses operating in the area.

“We agreed that we will rope in the Metro Police for law enforcement as many of these trucks enter into residential areas,” he said.

Reddy said the meeting resolved that the councillor will meet with the CRRA monthly with progress reports on all related matters.

The next meeting is proposed to be held on the last Wednesday of March at Yuvak Arya Samaj Hall on 142 Cherry Road, Clairwood. Meetings are held subject to the councillor’s availability.
