Fleeing business robber nabbed with a firearm

A 27-year-old suspect was arrested while he was fleeing the scene.

EMPLOYEES at business premises on Kenyon Howden Drive in Montclair were held at gunpoint by a group of men recently. According to the provincial police, the incident happened in the morning at about 08:45.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said the group of men stole cigarettes and cash before fleeing the scene.

“Police officers from Montclair SAPS and local security officers attended to the robbery and there was a shootout. A 27-year-old suspect was arrested while he was fleeing the scene.

“He was found in possession of a firearm with 11 rounds of ammunition. A joint follow up operation was conducted by the police and private security companies to search for the remaining suspects who fled the scene,” she said.

Investigations led the team to Umlazi where a firearm magazine, ammunition, cigarettes, clothes as well as a substantial amount of coins were found. Gwala said that investigations are still ongoing to track the remaining suspects.

“Charges of robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition are investigated by Montclair SAPS. The suspect appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 7,” she added.
