THREE people were injured in an alleged drive-by shooting on Major Calvert Road on Wednesday (January 12) in the evening.
The police’s provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said three people sustained leg injuries during the incident.
“They were walking along the road when three unknown men opened fire, wounding them. The three victims, aged between 16 and 22, sustained gunshot wounds on their right and left legs and were taken to the hospital. The motive for the shooting is unknown,” she said.
The ward 68 councillor, Aubrey Snyman, said there were more shooting incidents the next morning.
“It seems to never end. It has been going on for some time now. We are in the situation now where the community is traumatised and young, innocent people, as well as adults, are getting injured. It has to do with drug-related matters whereby you find that these drug scum are shooting at one another,” he said.
Snyman added that innocent people are being shot at because the gunmen aren’t skilled at shooting.
He said gun violence in the area happens at any time, and at random.
“It is sad because as much as the police are trying to sort this problem out, one does not know when it will raise its head again. SAPS Wentworth is under-resourced and we’re trying to get some reinforcement with the CPF and various other organisations. We’re also trying to get the director of police to assist,” he said.
Gwala said that charges of attempted murder were opened at Wentworth Police Station.
