Man drowns at Brighton Beach

Residents were able to save one of the two men after the current had swept them into the sea.

EMERGENCY services are currently on the lookout for a man who got swept out to sea on Thursday evening, January 6.

According to the spokesperson of the KZN EMS, Robert McKenzie, two men got pulled into the sea by currents and one has still not been found.

“Two men in their 30s were swept out to sea at Brighton Beach. Members of the public called emergency services and when they arrived they found that one man had been rescued by members of the public.

“Paramedics assessed this man and found that he was in a serious condition. He was stabilised at the scene before being transported to the hospital for continued medical care. At this stage, the one patient is still missing and the search for this person is still continuing,” he said.

Bluff resident, Andy Rossell, who was instrumental in alerting authorities said the incident was tragic. He said as sad as it is, this was the perfect opportunity to teach people about safe swimming at sea.

“This is an opportunity to educate people about how to recognise the signs of when to go in for a swim. It is a rather tragic incident and a very sad one, condolences to the man’s family,” he said.
