With reports that loadshedding is here to stay for the next five years, here are some ways to beat the loadshedding blues by investing in some key products and lifestyle changes that would make the blackouts bearable.

Here are six tips and tricks to try ahead of the next bout of loadshedding scheduled.

2. Stay connected with a portable power bank to ensure you have your mobile phone fully charged during power cuts. Power banks are great and convenient to have and can even charge up to four devices when the power is off.

 

3. Use battery-operated lights. You can get lanterns, torches and other battery-operated lights to keep around the house when the power goes off or try invest in solar lamps or lights. These are generally less dangerous than using candles to keep the lights on when Eskom can’t.

 

4. Switch off your appliances before the power goes off. This is an important and often overlooked tip that helps the longevity and life of your appliances. It’s not always possible to rush off back from work to switch off appliances or even when there’s a surprise loadshedding schedule launched – but where and when you can, try it!

5. Use a flask. This is a great way to keep your coffee or tea warm, especially in the mornings or for mothers that need to have hot boiled water available for their babies’ bottles.  

 

6. Make the most of ‘down-time’. Sneak in some exercise with your family or friends during hours when the power is off or use this opportunity to play board games or bond and enjoy quality one-on-one time again.
