Kidnapped girl (4) rescued from would-be muthi ritual

The four suspects, two women and two men, appeared at the Durban Magistrate's Court court today.

THE four-year-old girl, who was kidnapped on Friday, December 3, from a sports ground in Clairwood, was allegedly going to be taken to Nkandla on Saturday morning, December 4, for a muthi ritual.

Brighton Beach Police spokesperson, Captain Louise le Roux, said the four suspects, two women aged 79 and 48, and two men, aged 23 and 19, appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 6.

Le Roux, said the lead detective on the case, Detective Sergeant Sanele Ngcobo, opposed bail for the four suspects. The suspects were denied bail.

The mother opened a case at the Brighton Beach Police Station after her friend told her that the child was taken by an unknown man.

“The mother’s friend claimed that the girl was playing with friends at the Dayal Road grounds. The mother hastily made her way home. She spoke with the children at the grounds who confirmed that an unknown man, dressed in a blue jacket and black jeans, was watching them,” said Le Roux.

The acting station commander, Detective Lieutenant Colonel Tony Govender, established a task team that comprised of senior detectives and call-group members. They made their way to the crime scene.

“The direction the stranger and girl walked was established. Footage was sourced from a fuel station situated along South Coast Road. It revealed the kidnapper carrying the girl, placing her inside a vehicle,” she said.

Leads of the vehicle used in the commission of the crime pointed Ngcobo to Umlazi, M-Section. He was assisted by Detective Constable Nonto Mazibuko, members of the CPF reaction group and private security companies.

“The owner of the vehicle was found, and he accompanied the team to the residence of the e-hailing cab driver. The driver co-operated with law enforcement officers and took the team to the house where he had dropped off his passengers.

“There, the team arrested a suspect in F-Section, which led them to Q-Section, where they apprehended three individuals at a house,” Le Roux said.

The matter was handed over to Brighton Beach’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit who will be investigating.
