Matrics urged to reconsider after-party events

The provincial government said it is committed to its responsibility of protecting the lives of all citizens and called each citizen to play their part.

KWAZULU-NATAL’s Premier, Sihle Zikalala has warned parents and learners against organising or taking part in events and celebrations that may flout the current Covid-19 safety protocols as it could endanger lives.

According to Zikalala, the activities that became Covid-19 super spreaders are once again being hosted in the province, despite the new upsurge in Covid-19 cases and the danger of the Omicron variant.

He said reports show that learners, especially matriculants, have converged in KwaZulu-Natal events.

“Young people gather in large groups, others indulge in alcohol binges and other malevolent activities. We want to reiterate that these are super spreader activities, which endanger the lives of young people and expose them and, ultimately, all those around them to the deadly coronavirus,” said Zikalala.

“These gatherings are often characterised by the consumption and risk behavior, which posed a threat to human life, especially in the wake of the new Omicron Covid-19 variant. We expect parents to play a leading role in guiding their children, by ensuring that the children are safe to enter the next stage of their lives after matric,” said Zikalala.

Ballito Rage, an event that has previously been dubbed as a super spreader, was cancelled after 36 people (32 guests and 4 staff) tested positive for Covid-19.
