Help support child cancer patients with CHOC’s new fundraising campaign

CHOC offers practical support in the form of accommodation, transport assistance and Carebags to more than 3 000 beneficiaries each year.

IN an ongoing effort to support and care for children and teenagers with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders), the Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC) has partnered with Discovery Vitality for the Vitality MoveToGive campaign.

MoveToGive uses crowdsourced philanthropy to improve the lives of thousands of South Africans by enabling Vitality members to support charitable causes, such as CHOC, for social good.

The campaign with CHOC was launched on October 11 and will run until Monday, November 22.

The app-based functionality allows members who reach their weekly activity, financial and driving goals to donate their earned Discovery Miles to a preselected cause or charity.

CHOC’s CEO, Hedley Lewis said, “CHOC’s support is critical to ensuring children and teens from all communities adhere to their seven-months up to three-year treatment journey.  Annually, it costs CHOC R33m to ensure our 3 000+ beneficiaries adhere to their treatment, in addition to maintaining their physical, emotional and psychological well-being.  Financial constraints should not determine whether children and teens receive or adhere to treatment,” said Lewis.

“The Covid-19 pandemic challenged our fundraising efforts, hence I am extremely appreciative and proud that Discovery Vitality MoveToGive adopted CHOC as a charity.  I implore all Vitality members to make a difference and help CHOC to keep more than hope alive for our beneficiaries, ” he said.

James Vos, the head of product management at Discovery Vitality and lead on the MoveToGive initiative, said his team was grateful to have a member base that is generous in supporting those fighting cancer.

“It is an honour to partner with CHOC, whose mission aligns so closely with Discovery’s core purpose of making people healthier and protecting and enhancing their lives,” he added.
