PICS: Organisation spotlights breast cancer awareness in Merebank

Organisers, Vanessa Bandiah, said they aimed and delivered on making the event informative and fun-filled.

WOMEN and a handful of men made their way to the Marigold Banquet Hall for a morning of good company, entertainment and treats on Saturday, October 23.

Aimed at raising breast cancer awareness, the Punjab Circle event in Merebank enjoyed a great turnout. Various guests graced the stage to either share their experiences and or advise on breast cancer.

One of the organisers, Vanessa Bandiah, said they aimed and delivered at making the event informative and fun-filled.

“The event was to shed light on breast cancer awareness to our community, especially women. Our guest speaker, who is based at Kingsway Hospital, medical and radiation oncologist, Dr Moshina Kisten, demonstrated and told the women how to go about doing a self-examination on their breasts,” she said.

The organisers were careful to prioritise the health and safety of guests under strict Covid-19 protocol adherence.

There was never a dull moment as guests eagerly participated in the activities. Mistress of ceremonies, Mashnee Chetty, kept guests entertained with her wit and engaging activities.

“This event also allowed the women to get away from their homes for a few hours and enjoy some me-time. Our MC directed the event with such grace and vibrance,” Bandiah added.

Guest speaker Therona Naidoo detailed how she survived the dreaded disease. Thilla Miller from the Merewent Cancer Association informed guests about the purpose and journey of the group. Gnanum Moodley did the honour of cutting the cake. There were also amazing prizes given away in the lucky draw.

The event was made possible by Sibaya Community Trust, Women of Wonder (WOW) and Daughters of Africa.

The WOW organisation is made up of six women who share a similar vision of spreading love, care, joy and happiness. It is a non-profit group that engages in monthly initiatives to create positivity and try to make the world a better place.

The team does whatever is necessary to uplift the lives of people, animals and any living being who needs a helping hand. The women see themselves as ambassadors of kindness and compassion and believe that they can continue making a difference.
