Bluff residents urged to dump waste accordingly

The garbage build-up and dumping at the corner of Beach Road and Marine Drive has become an eyesore and ongoing problem in the Oceanview area.

THE garbage build-up and dumping at the corner of Beach Road and Marine Drive has become an eyesore and ongoing problem in the Oceanview area.

“The area is a collection point for the green bins of businesses in the area, to put their bins out for emptying and collection of the waste according to DSW tariffs. The bins are not for general public use or nearby residents,” stressed ward 66 councillor Zoe Solomon.

Nearby business owner, Susan Seath expressed her frustrations regarding the ongoing problem. “We find that residents in the area (along Marine Drive and Beach Road in particular) dump their residential black garbage bags on this pavement if they have missed their collection or if they have bags that they wish to remove from their property. Although the truck does arrive to empty the green bins, it doesn’t pick up the bags which then build up. This is the entrance to our business. We need a sign erected a sign to advise residents that black bags may not be dumped here and that the point is only for green bin waste,” said Seath.

There used to be a big fixed bin on the pavement near the street name pole, however, it was metal and rusted away. Seath has previously pleaded with Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to provide fixed bins for the area one being on this very pavement. “The area on most days looks like a rubbish dump and really needs to be attended to most urgently,” she added.

“I did have a meeting with DSW Education before lockdown and the official met me on site. I will liaise with them on having that rolled out. They agreed to place public bins on the street poles along the area as well as a sign prohbiting littering. There was also feedback that residents tend to dump their household garbage in these bins which is a problem,” said Solomon who urges the residents to take out their garbage on their designated collection days, as DSW is only authorised to collect waste within the bins and not garbage bags dumped nearby.
