Veld fire survivor finds her way to Crow

The Yellowwood Park-based centre has made 1177 rescues, received 3576 admissions and 1022 releases in the period of September 2020 and August 2021.

A UNIQUE animal was admitted at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) recently, Umlilo, a side-striped jackal pup that was rescued from a veld fire in Zululand.

“Unfortunately she was the only survivor out of three pups that made it out the fire which ran right over her den. In IsiZulu, umlilo means fire in English which seemed a perfect fit for her name. She has been in our care for two weeks now and is doing exceptionally well. She loves to keep herself busy with her chew tows and feathers,” said Crow operations manager Clint Halkett-Siddall.
