Baby birds are booming at Crow

As expected, they are falling off their nests during the season. Here's how you can help.

A CHIRP here, there, and everywhere only means one thing!

It’s baby season and the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s (Crow) baby bird room is booming.

While the season is in full swing, as expected, baby birds can and are falling off their nests and Crow is receiving numerous calls about it.

In a statement, the wildlife rehab centre advised that if there are no visible injuries, the ideal situation is to put the bird back in its nest.

“We really don’t want to break up the family. However, sometimes the nest is too high or they are injured. The next best step is to bring the patient to Crow.”

“Birds have different diets and it’s hard to identify which bird species they belong to if they are just tiny blobs. We have very experienced nurses, who are able to tell them apart and will give them the correct specialised diet,” the statement reads, urging that the bird be not fed anything.

Further advising to not feed any of the injured birds with either ProNutro, milk, eggs, or bread, but to take them to Crow instead.

Another important point highlighted when transporting the fledgling patient, is to keep them in a warm, dark box and keep the noise down to a minimum.

In an unrelated post, the centre appeals for plants for the animals in its care. The hibiscus or mulberry trees, as well as succulents in the form of a donation, will go a long way for the animals.

For Yellowwood Park residents, Crow does the collections and even branch cuttings themselves.

Alternatively, get in touch with the centre on 031 462 1127 during office hours, 083 212 5281, or like their Facebook page @crow.kzn for regular updates.
