Merebank pioneer Chinsamy Moodley dies

The 93-year-old was known to residents as a pioneer and a master shelter man for his marquee business.

PROMINENT Merebank businessman, Chinsamy Moodley, has died. The 93-year-old was known to residents as a pioneer and a master shelter man for his marquee business.

He was born on January 3, 1928, and grew up in Landsdowne Road Weilis, Merewent. He died on Wednesday, September 15.

He worked at a factory in Jacobs for 47 years. His loyalty, respect and trust kept him a busy businessman.

He is described as a loving husband to his wife, Salviranieama, whom he leaves behind. He also leaves behind six daughters and a son, 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His daughter, Shirena Pheckoo, called him her superhero who worked effortlessly. “Rest in peace, humble dad,” she said.

Community activist, Rishi Sewsunker, recalled that Moodley, at 91-years-old, was still able to drive his car to fetch his chronic medication from the clinic.

“He told me that the building was not even there when he came to live in Merebank. He leaves behind many memories as he was the first young man to provide and have erected thousands of marquees to shelter residents’ functions.”

“This man did not fear to share his skills to prove that he could erect a three-pole marquee. With limited space and labour, he did it to customer satisfaction.”

“His reliable vintage model brown Chevrolet van helped him transport items to his duty point. Sincere condolences to the family and friends,” he said.

Moodley left his Bhuj Road home on Friday, September 17, to his final resting place.
