‘Horsing around’ at the YWP Stables

Udobo Pre-Primary School learners got to explore the Yellowwood (YWP) Stables recently.

THE little ones of Udobo Pre-Primary School in Montclair got to explore the Yellowwood (YWP) Stables and its majestic four-legged beauties recently.

The school’s principal, Anne Snyders, said the outing proved a fantastic way for the children to interact with the horses and nature. “Our children benefit from outings but with Covid-19 it has not been possible to take them on busses and expose them to illnesses.

“The Yellowwood Park Gymkhana Club (YWP Stables) offered a safe and nearby outing where we could rely on teacher’s cars to transport the children. The stables are so peaceful and quiet that one can hardly imagine that they were positioned in town. The children loved the walk around the premises where they could see the horses, they were very keen to touch the friendly horses. After having a good walk and enjoying the fresh air, we settled down to have a picnic lunch. The children also did a lovely craft where they painted and decorated a horseshoe with beads and shiny objects making for a lovely keepsake of the outing,” she said.

The highlight was each child having the opportunity to ride on a horse which was an absolute delight.

“The trip benefitted our children tremendously. We had children who were very fearful at first and soon overcame their fears and wanted to play with the horses. Many can’t wait to go back. Animals have such a positive effect on all of us and we are grateful to Shannen Bruce from YWP Stables for this opportunity,” added Anne.

Shannen said she was delighted to have the young visitors. “This has been a great way to promote the Yellowwood Park Stables especially since we have been having visits from city officials and we don’t know what that would mean for our future. Reaching out to Udobo as an NPO school was important to us and such initiatives are a great way of integrating ourselves into the community. It was an absolute pleasure having the children throughout the week and teaching them about horses in our care.”
