Liyanda comes alive on the hockey field

The talented player was also selected as her school’s senior hockey captain.

BLAZING the field armed with her hockey stick in hand is Yellowwood Park Primary School (YWPPS) learner, Liyanda Memani.

The centre forward made the cut at this year’s Durban South Hockey trials, successfully making the team. “It felt amazing knowing that I had achieved this goal. It wasn’t easy and I had some doubts because there were a lot of good players that day.”

The talented player was also selected as her school’s senior hockey captain.

“This was one of my proudest moments as it is a big responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I also cherish all the moments that I had with my team whether we won or lost matches. Hockey is not an easy sport. It takes time and a lot of practice to be able to dribble and control the ball. You can also get hurt anytime when playing on the field. To be a good team player you have to be able to communicate and trust your fellow team players,” shared the Grade 7 learner.

She started playing hockey when she was 11 years old and shared that to make it as a professional player would be a dream come true for her, provided she puts in hard work to make it happen.

Liyanda considers her family as her greatest support system. “They are always there for me and push me to do the best that I can at all times. My mother is my role model because she’s the person I go to when I need to talk to someone. She’s is an amazing woman.”

The 13-year-old aspires to pursue a career in dermatology when she grows up. “I enjoy watching the show Dr Pimple Popper which inspired my dream to become a dermatologist.”

She is a self-proclaimed sports fan and when she isn’t perfecting her hockey skills, she enjoys playing netball and soccer.
