VIDEO: Wentworth Angels braze cold to fill community’s food gap

The team had to adapt to even more dire situations following the almost week-long civil unrest.

COLD, but less likely to be hungry – the Wentworth Angels are on a tireless mission to ensure that residents get a nutritious meal every day.

While feeding in Wentworth and surrounding areas is nothing new, the team had had to adapt to even more dire situations following the almost week-long civil unrest.

The organisation has had to keep up with hectic schedules, often enduring sleepless nights in service of others.

The founder, Tracey Williams, said they’ve even had to put off distributing blankets as the soup kitchen has been more pressing.

“We’ve been working tirelessly with the feeding scheme. We’ve had to pull in hectic hours where we mostly sacrifice our sleep to ensure that we deliver meals timeously,” she said.

The blanket drive was scheduled to happen on Mandela Day Sunday, July 18 to coincide with the day of goodwill in service of others. Tracey advised that the blanket drive will take place at a later stage.

She also said that donations were still welcome. The organisation appeals to doctors for help with cough mixture and Covid-19 packs.

“We are also requesting assistance with the feeding scheme. With Covid-19 and everything else going on in the communities, the poverty and unemployment rate have risen.”

“We encourage businesses to get involved with NPOs that feed on a daily basis. We thank all our sponsors who continue to support us in these trying times.”

“A special thank you to Durban North Lions member, Vanessa Wilesmith who recently added canned food to our donation box, Esmeen Usher who provided us with 200 meals of rice and chicken for Eid.”

“Lastly, thank you to our anonymous sponsor for the 120 loaves of bread that went a long way for our people,” she added.
