Merebank residents feel safer as CCTV cameras are fixed

The cameras were non-functional over several years.

THE tireless efforts of two community activists culminated in good for the community following the restoration of CCTV cameras in Merebank.

The non-functional cameras, based at the municipal library near the Merebank Shopping Centre complex, have been finally sorted out thanks to Paul Naidoo and Rugs Naidu of the Merebank Alliance Forum. Paul said the cameras were non-functional over several years.

“This was brought to our attention as community activists serving on various community-based organisations. I immediately took it upon myself to address this issue with Metro Police Department. The complaint was addressed on Friday, May 21, and was efficiently handled by Lt-Col Neville Govender,” he said.

At every stage of the progress, Paul said, Govender was in contact with him. He said this was evident in the thread of emails in which Govender escalated the complaint to the relevant authorities within his department. “The good news was communicated to me on Thursday, July 8. The final message read as follows,” said Paul, who expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Metro policeman for his assistance and the timeous feedbacks.

“The Disaster Management personnel worked tirelessly and have restored feed to the camera. We will monitor the area via our visuals and try to make the area safer. Please feel free to contact us with further information to help our operators,” reads the email from Govender.

The activists made further requests to report two CCTV cameras located at Calicut Place View Point, Merebank, and at the corner of Tara and Basil February roads, Bluff.
