Durban South Primary goes green with Ronnie

Durban South Primary received a special visit from Ronnie Recycler, the Mpact Recycling mascot and Procurement Representative from Mpact Recycling, Danielle King on Tuesday, 23 June.

IN a mission to reinforce the importance of recycling, the South Durban Basin ABM (SDB ABM) partnered with Durban South Primary School together with Mpact Recycling Company recently.

Durban South Primary received a special visit from Ronnie Recycler, the Mpact Recycling mascot and Procurement Representative from Mpact Recycling, Danielle King on Tuesday, 23 June.

Mpact Recycling runs numerous pick-up programmes in schools, communities and offices. Not only do these initiatives create income opportunities and raise recycling awareness, responsibility and sustainability but also push recycling levels to new heights.

Ronnie Recycler and Procurement Representative from Mpact Recycling, Danielle King educate the learners of Durban South Primary.

“By recycling, you benefit the environment in several ways: it diverts recyclable paper, paper-based packaging and plastic away from landfills, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and prevents the incineration of recyclable paper,” said King. The organisation embraces the social entrepreneurship empowerment model by partnering with local entrepreneurs to help collect recycled paper.

Senior Manager of SDB ABM, Eurakha Singh commended Mpact for affording this opportunity to learners and definitely this knowledge will make an impact in the lives of the learners and environment. “We aim to encourage learners to bring all recyclables to the school and Mpact to collect so that our environment will stay clean and green at all times.”

“We are excited that the school will be entered into the national recycling competition around September/October this year. The school will get paid for waste collected by Mpact and thereafter the school that collects the most waste will win a prize in the national competition,” said Irene Chetty Co-ordinator SDB ABM. Durban South Primary School principal, Silindile Msomi shared that she was happy to have the two organisations visit the school and teach the learners about the importance of recycling.

“This programme will help them know what products and materials need to be recycled. This also ties in perfectly with our anti-litter policy here at the school. The lessons learnt through such initiatives will be instilled in these young girls and they will carry this with them outside of the school environment, sharing knowledge with others and well into the future.”
