Burgle proof your roof, security company urges

The company's operations director said roof break-ins are common in the greater Durban area, and roof security should not be neglected.

BLUE Security Armed Response Officers were called to a scene in Woodhaven recently. Their client said suspects had gained access to their home via the ceiling.

The spokesperson for the security company, Omshenie Naidoo said once in the ceiling, the suspects cut the electric wires for the alarm system, housed there and fled.

“While no further action was taken, the move is disturbing. Thieves, aware of alarm sensors on doors and windows, have been known to gain access to businesses and homes via the roof and, resultantly, the ceiling.”

“In some instances, they access enclosed verandas and may be able to enter the ceiling from these concealed, often unarmed areas. Needless to say, this causes a great deal of damage and is costly and tedious for homeowners to repair,” she said.

The company’s operations director, Brian Jackson said roof break-ins are common in the greater Durban area, and roof security should not be neglected.

He said homeowners could prevent being ambushed from above by thinking of their security in layers.

“Layered security systems buy valuable time during an emergency and can be the difference between an attempted break-in or an armed robbery. Layered security is about early alarm activation.

“It gives homeowners the time to press a panic button or get to safety to avoid confrontation,” he said.

Essentially layered security, he said, is about placing as many barriers as possible between intruders and yourself. These include:

– External and internal CCTV cameras. With video verification, you can link your camera to your alarm system, and your alarm company can respond to an alarm activation immediately.
– Similarly, you can link your electric fence to your alarm system.
– Strategically placed outdoor beams can detect thieves before they have time to approach the house, let alone the roof.

“Unique microwave roof passives or sensors are also available,” he added.
