PICS: Initiative aims to give Wentworth a ‘face lift’
The group was formed by like-minded individuals who want to address issues of illegal dumping in the community in practical ways as well as to beautify their area.
TO change the outlook of Wentworth by giving it a well-deserved face-lift which in turn will uplift, empower, inspire and motivate the community.
This is the mandate of the newly formed community group, Keep Wentworth Beautiful, that hosted its launch to coincide with the unveiling of their adopt-a-spot on the corner of Rooks Road and Goede Hoep Street in Wentworth on Thursday, 29 April.
Community leaders and members were out to support the worthy initiative which was backed by various departments including parks and recreation, roads, Safer Cities, Metro Police and the South Durban Basin Area Based Management (SDB ABM).
The group was formed by like-minded individuals who wanted to address issues of illegal dumping in the community in practical ways as well as to beautify their area.
“Our main drive and aim is to change mindsets and transform targeted areas within Wentworth where people have been dumping dirt, refuse, rubble and any waste.
“We stand to serve and service our community with excellence and quality by building a beautiful, safe environment for all who live in it.
“We understand and know the importance of a healthy, tranquil and safe environment as we bring to you the best service solutions for change and transformation.
“Keep Wentworth Beautiful will arrange clean-up days in partnership with the community of Wentworth, surrounding businesses, schools, churches and government, to rid Wentworth of dirt thereby bringing beauty and restoring life into our homes and streets again,” said one of the group’s directors Carolyn Jacobs.
Another director, Eunice McAllister, who spearheaded the said adopt-a-spot, admitted that the group has their work cut out for them.
“We will be visible on the road cleaning up this community that we call home,” she said.
The group aims to drive environmental consciousness and awareness by having teams visit and present at local schools, run community projects, encouraging businesses to join the adopt-a-spot programme as well as advocating local government institute tenders on grass cutting and street cleaning.
