House robbers caught in the act in Merebank

The spokesperson for the Wentworth police, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the homeowner was at work when he received a call from his son to alert him of the break-in.

WENTWORTH police are following leads to arrest a second suspect who was involved in a house break-in in Merebank.

This comes after two men were spotted breaking and entering into a home in Junagarth Road on Tuesday, 30 March, at about 12.30pm.

Police said the arrested suspect is a 37-year-old foreign national. The spokesperson for the Wentworth police, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the homeowner was at work when he received a call from his son to alert him of the break-in.

“The complainant contacted the nearby neighbours to call the security company to attend to this complaint. Security officers attended swiftly and the suspect was seen running away from the scene into Bhuj Road.”

“He was arrested and found in possession of house-breaking implements such as a crowbar and screwdriver. The other suspect managed to evade the arrest,” he said.

The man was handed over to Wentworth police’s vispol members who were already at the scene of the crime. He is currently in custody with looming charges and a court appearance.

“Wentworth Police thank the neighbours who assisted to report the incident to the security company. This resulted in the swift arrest of the perpetrator. The security company’s officers are also commended for the good work they have done. A criminal is now behind bars,” Gumede said.

A burglar guard in the living room was broken and bent but nothing was taken from the house, the captain said.
