Montclair SAPS creates crime awareness through safety campaign

The pamphlets that were distributed addressed gender-based violence, the rights of children and rape myths.

MONTCLAIR police embarked on a crime awareness campaign at the Montclair Mall on Wednesday morning, 10 March.

Led by the station commander, Colonel Trevor Small, his team from the communications, support and social crime prevention units distributed pamphlets to the community.

“SAPS Montclair members walked around the mall with the objective of increasing police visibility and educating the general public on safety,” said Captain Derek Vijiam.

“Pamphlets were distributed to address gender-based violence, the rights of children, rape myths and Bika Udlame Lwasekhaya (report abuse from home) – a programme that encourages victims of domestic violence to break the silence of abuse,” said Vijiam.

Pamphlets to address drug and substance abuse were also handed out. These were used as a medium to encourage drug users and families to seek help.

Contact details of various NGOs and the Victim Friendly Facility were on the pamphlets.

“SAPS Montclair management expresses its appreciation to the Montclair Mall management for embracing this project and for their support of our crime awareness and prevention initiatives,” he added.
