Cable thieves nabbed in Yellowwood

Five men were arrested.

SUSPECTED cable thieves met their match in Yellowood Park when armed response teams caught them in the act.

At about 11pm on Thursday, 21 January, the ET Rapid Response team received reports via the crime WhatsApp groups about sounds of gunfire coming from the vicinity of the Sandpiper and Kestrel Crescent areas.

“Upon further investigation, it was established that there were suspects on the railway line busy stealing cables. PRASA, SPF members, Metro Police K9, and ET Rapid Response armed response division attended. Four suspects were detained,” said managing director, Tony Lokker.

He said a few minutes later more reports of gunfire were made and it was established that a fifth suspect was shooting at PRASA members on the railway line on Starling Road bridge.

“PRASA members managed to subdue the suspect and recover a firearm with live rounds. A total of five suspects were arrested, with one person sustaining a gunshot. The stolen cable, implements, and vehicle used in the commission of the offense were recovered. Well done to all members involved,” he added.
