Large mamba slithers into Clairwood home

Well known photographer and animal enthusiast and rescuer caught a 2.2 metre black mamba.

WHAT seemed like a quiet day for photographer and animal enthusiast and rescuer, Warren Dick ended with a bit of an adventure on Monday evening, 18 January.

Responding to a call from a panicked woman on Sirdar Road in Clairwood, about an angry snake inside their home, he dashed off to make the rescue at about 7.15pm.

He said the woman had explained that the snake was very big and clung to the burglar guard of their front door.

“Off I went. Clairwood being a very busy industrial area, I was fully expecting to find a brown house snake. When I arrived I was shown to the front door and immediately I saw this was no brown house snake but in fact a rather large black mamba.”

“I was a bit wary of tackling the snake by myself, scared that it may try to bolt, in which case it would be so much easier having back up to handle the situation. I phoned my good friend and pro mamba wrangler, Nick Evans,” Warren said.

The 2.2 metre black mamba recently caught at a Clairwood home.

In a matter of minutes, Nick had joined him on the snake catch.

“In the end my fears of it bolting somewhere were unfounded, and it was a pretty easy catch. Although, I must say the snake was very strong. It measured around 2.2 metres and our guess is that it came into the area on a truck, as many container trucks pass through the Clairwood area daily.”

“The snake was released the next morning, far away from people. A big thank you to Nick for the backup,” he added.
