Little Alexis showered with happy mail

Four-year-old Alexis was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was two-years-old, which took her out of school and away from friends most of the time.

IT was like something out of cute movie scene when little Alexis Healy was surprised with a special delivery of heartfelt messages and goodies from members of the Bluff community.

Four-year-old Alexis was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was two-years-old, which took her out of school and away from friends most of the time. At the time of her diagnosis she was in dire need for blood transfusions as her white blood cell count was very low and she spent most of last year in and out of hospital. Although her health has improved a bit this year, the outbreak of Covid-19 left her more isolated than ever before.

Paul, Bianca and Alexis Healy were overjoyed when they received a surprise delivery of cards and goodies from a local pre-school on the Bluff.

“Last year was tough because we were in the hospital a lot for blood checks, tests, transfusions, chemotherapy, lumber punctures and treatment. Now she only goes in for treatment once a month and the rest of the time she takes medication at home. With her health being more stable we thought it would be better this year and that she would be able to see more people but Covid-19 happened, so we haven’t been able to take her anywhere and she can’t really see anyone. We also really don’t want to take the chance because of her immune system.

“I remember there was a child overseas that was also ill and the mother put out a plea for people to send pictures or postcards or letters. So I thought, seeing as Alexis is so lonely and often gets upset when someone gets mail and she doesn’t, I thought I’d also give the idea a try and see what happens. So far we haven’t received anything through the post, due to backlog with postal services because of Covid-19.

“However, a parent from a local pre-school saw the Facebook post and reached out to her child’s classmates to do cards for Alexis. The response exceeded our expectations when we received cards, posters, pictures and even toys from all the learners at the school. There has also been a few couriers and close friends have also dropped off some things. Alexis has been over the moon about it,” shared parents, Paul and Bianca Healy.

“Alexis is the most treasured gift ever received. The last two years have been beyond trying but I would not trade it for anything, as sad, angry and fed up as we have been – the triumphs, smiles and joys have surpassed all the sadness. And when I put my plea out for letters, I did not expect everything we have received, we are so grateful. You have all restored my belief in humanity, thank you, beautiful, awesome friends, I will never forget this,” said Bianca.

Little Alexis is over the moon with all her goodies. Local doctor, Dr FB Khan has also offered a box at her practice where community members are welcome to drop off some mail for Alexis on 297 Lighthouse Road, Bluff.
