Make Christmas extra special for Tafta elders

For just R120, you can sponsor a single elder to enjoy a festive lunch at Tafta this Christmas.

THE elderly have given up so much this year, help Tafta (The Association for the Aged) make sure they don’t have to give up their Christmas lunch too.

“It has been a tough year for all of us; avoiding social gatherings, being away from our families and suffering the losses that came with the Covid-19 pandemic. But more especially for elders, it has been a terrifying experience of living isolated and in fear,” said Tafta’s Divisional Manager for Income Development and PR, Prevashni Naidu.

According to Tafta CEO Femada Shamam, the year has been particularly trying for our elders: “For the aged, who have been most vulnerable to the deadly Coronavirus, this year has taken away so much from them. For their own safety, they have been kept apart from their loved ones for months on end. Some have lost dear friends and family members. Added to the tragedy of the loss, was the reality of not being able to say goodbye”.

Dudu Khumalo of Tafta Kings Hall, shared her Covid-19 experience: “Lockdown has made me sad because we cannot come together and enjoy ourselves. One of the most traumatic things about Covid-19 is my sister losing her child and I was unable to attend the funeral. After some time, I visited my sister and I then had to quarantine for seven days, unable to talk to my friends or neighbours which made me very sad.”

Another Tafta resident Rachel Chetty shares that what she has missed most this year is the inability to visit the Tafta wellness centre: “Covid-19 was very difficult for us; we missed our families and our friends. We enjoy attending many parties and activities at the Wellness Centre, but during lockdown we had nothing and it was very sad. Now I hope we can all get together again”, said Chetty.

Tafta resident Rachel Chetty shared how she missed the inability to visit the Tafta wellness centre.

“This is a powerful reminder that we all need to cherish each moment life grants us and one of the reasons why we want to make this Christmas extra special for our elderly folk. But it is going to require generous help from caring people like you to show the true spirit of Christmas and spread joy to those that are most in need,” said Naidu.

“With support from the good people of Durban, we will make sure that every elder in our care gets invited to a delicious three-course festive lunch. On the menu is roast lamb and roast chicken, potatoes, veg and Christmas pudding or trifle for dessert. Even though we have managed to keep the cost down to just R120 per person, when you multiply that by the 1 367 elders on our invitation list, you will understand why we need your help to make this Christmas miracle come true,” said Shamam.

For just R120, you can sponsor a single elder to enjoy a festive lunch at Tafta. R240 pays for two friends to go together. R480 sponsors a table of four, R720 a table of six, and R1200 a table of ten. Donate to Tafta and make Christmas special for its elders this year.
