THE Blue Roof Life Space has put together a dynamic youth desk component at the centre to assist the youth.
The team is eager to encourage, motivate and empower the youth of Wentworth, Merebank and Bluff. Since health is an important aspect of society at the moment, this initiative is great for the new youth desk to start off with the #WozaWellness Programme. The programme launched on Monday, 19 October for the youth aged between 16 and 25 years.
“#WozaWellness is a call to come to wellness which is so much more than being free from illness. It is a dynamic process of change and growth. Covid-19 has left many youth feeling displaced, unmotivated or stuck. This is a personal development programme that offers an interactive time where you are able to earn Blue Roof Beans. This is a reward system that gives you access to the café where they can buy anything to the value of R20,” said Operation Sukuma Sakhe committee member, Neil Axford.
“We now have an active youth office with the intention of reintroducing Blue Roof to the community throughout the Durban south region. Woza Wellness is the perfect vehicle to do this. The programme has three components which are: personal development, career guidance and health screening. There will also be a interactive workshop for the youth who are part of this initiative. They will graduate at the end of this programme with certificates. We also have plans for future programmes which will focus on developing young men and women. We want the youth from all over the South Durban Basin to also engage in a youth forum which will provide a platform to discuss various topics and issues which are most relevant to them.
“We still need more support from the business world in terms of funding, even if its towards the Blue Roof Beans as this helps provide our youth with a meal for the day. We encourage young people to become of this programme. It will provide them with a safe space, allow them to redirect their focus away from the world that troubles them and to grow. There is also an emphasis on mental health and overall physical wellness which is central to Blue Roof’s values. I was once young myself and I went through a lot of things that scarred me and I want young people to have a better chance at life,” said programme coordinator, Khulani Chiliza.
Each workshop runs weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 12pm for out of school learners and again at 3pm to 5pm after school. The first group is fully booked however, the next lot can book now for the next session starting on Monday, 26 October.
