Bluff gymnast beats lockdown blues

Bluff gymnast, Anneliese Adams, shares how she has been dealing with the lockdown.

ONE of the Bluff’s most talented gymnasts, Anneliese Adams, misses thriving in her element.

There is no denying the 15-year-old’s skills in the gymnasium. Her most recent achievements include securing third place at last year’s nationals and first at all KZN regional competitions. She was also successfully selected for the KZN team for the South African Gymnastics Federation that attended the 2019 World Gymnaestrada in Austria.

“I am very grateful to everyone that made it possible for me to go. The experience was amazing, being in a different country with other amazing gymnasts and watching the different performances from each country was wonderful and inspiring,” said Anneliese who trains at Glenwood Gymnastics.

Asked how the impact of Covid-19 has affected her, she said that she has been doing online zoom gymnastic classes arranged by her gymnastics club. “This year I was really looking forward to making nationals because I had improved my routines which are far more challenging than last year’s.

“To keep active I like to train in my own time when I am free and my coaches prepare weekly training routines. Personally, I do get bored but I keep myself occupied with school work and gymnastics. As a gymnast, lockdown has been quite hard to adjust because it is easy to lose focus but I motivate myself so that I am not falling off track. I haven’t really left home since the beginning of the lockdown because of the risk of contracting Covid-19 and passing it on to my family members. I haven’t even seen my friends and family for so long and I really miss them. But we contact each other over the phone and video call,” she said.

Anneliese is currently part of a Cambridge International Programme which is equivalent to Grade 10. The talented teen also enjoys dance and shared that her supporters have played an important role in her life and successes. “My biggest supporters would most definitely be my friends, coaches and family and especially my mum and dad for always being there for me.”
