Crewman rescued after medical emergency on crude oil tanker

Observing all Department of Health Covid-19 regulations during this operation, two Netcare 911 rescue paramedics were transferred onto the ship to assist.

NATIONAL Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Durban and Netcare 911 parademics rescued a 34-year-old male crewman after a medical emergency was reported on a crude oil tanker on Sunday morning, 26 April.

The victim, from Kuala Lumpur, had suffered a medical complaint, not Covid-19 related. At 6.44am, the NSRI Durban sea rescue craft, Alick Rennie, accompanied by three Netcare 911 rescue paramedics, met with the crude oil tanker three nautical miles off-shore of the Port of Durban.

“Observing all Department of Health Covid-19 regulations during this operation, two Netcare 911 rescue paramedics were transferred onto the ship and took over from the ships medical crew.

“The patient, in a stable condition, was secured into a Stokes basket stretcher and a technical rope system was constructed and the patient was transferred from the ship onto the sea rescue craft. The two rescue paramedics were then transferred from the ship onto the sea rescue craft and the patient, in the care of the rescue paramedics, was brought to our NSRI Durban sea rescue station and he has been transported to hospital by a Netcare 911 ambulance for further medical care. The operation completed at 9am,” said Jonathan Kellerman, NSRI Durban station commander.
