‘Paw’ your support towards feeding scheme for fur babies

For almost six years now, dogs get to reconnect with arguably their favourite person who is always just as ready to shower them with treats as much as she does with love

THE slightest whiff of Cindy Kennerley’s scent is enough to get tails wagging in Clairwood, Jacobs and surrounding areas.

For almost six years now, every second Wednesday means dogs get to reconnect with arguably their favourite person who is always just as ready to shower them with treats as much as she does with love.

However, a typical feeding day for Cindy means extreme early mornings as the meals to feed about 120 dogs are prepared then.

Her face lit up when she said, “I’ve got a personal relationship with each dog I feed. I live for dogs. I love them all.”

“It’s a very emotional thing for me,” she explained. “But, the doggies in Clairwood saved my life, they helped pulled me out of the absolute despair I was in.”

“I knew I had to do something because I couldn’t carry on like I was. I was getting more and more depressed. I then decided that I would start rescuing dogs in my, boy, Storm’s name. I attribute everything I do to him.”

In 2014, her beloved Storm had to be put down. Feeling helpless and out of touch because she didn’t want to live without her precious boy, Cindy spiralled into a depression. But life had a better purpose for her and called her to take the helms of the feeding scheme as the health of the woman from Ballito who initiated the project was deteriorating.

Dog lover, Trisha Benjamin, who helps out with the feeding whenever she can.

“I told her I’d take over. She came out the next day and took me to places where she dropped food for the needy dogs and at that stage there were about 40 dogs.”

“From there it just grew and grew, hence why I am here today. A lot of dogs are in good health and are well taken of because of the food we provide. I depend on donations for food and a vet account because I can’t do it on my own,” she said.

Cindy is not only admired by the dogs she feeds but the dog owners themselves, which was evident when the SUN spoke to one of the beneficiaries, Pearly Peters from Clairwood, who welled up with tears.

“For everything, she is just there for me, when I phone her, she’s always there to help me. Anything that I need, Cindy is always there to help me and my dogs never starve because she is always here when it is time to give us food. She was also there when we had to put my other dog, Lassie, down because she was blind and had dementia,” said an emotional Pearl.

The Clairwood and Jacobs Feeding Scheme is always in need of donations, whether big or small, they are all accepted. Donations can be in the form of volunteering to assist with the feedings, dry food or money for the escalating vet bill.
