Lt King Park pool renovations underway

The pool is currently undergoing a packaging exercise by eThekwini Municipality's public pool department to determine how much it would cost to refurbish the entire pool area.

SEVERAL complaints have been received regarding the declining state of Lieutenant (Lt) King Park Swimming Pool. Complaints included the cleanliness of the change rooms, the poor quality of the change room benches and the deteriorating state of the public pool.

Based on these complaints, a sight meeting was conducted on Friday, 21 February to assess the extent of the complaints and implement interventions to address this concerns raised. The meeting was called by Ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo and attended by the ward sports committee chairperson, Chris Van Niekerk, senior manager for the pools department, Luntu Hlatshwayo and the District 5 pools manager Brian Taylor.

“During the visit it was confirmed that there was an issue with the sewage pit located on the premises recently. It took plumbers a lot longer to clear the sewage issues than expected and in turn caused some inconvenience among the residents using the pool. This issue has since been resolved and further investigations are being conducted to remove the soak pit and connect the facility directly to the municipal sewer line.

“The benches within the pools change rooms have been identified as a safety risk for anyone utilising the pool area. Therefore these benches will be removed immediately and replaced within the next few weeks,” said Prinsloo.

The pool is currently undergoing a packaging exercise by eThekwini Municipality’s public pool department to determine how much it would cost to refurbish the entire pool area. According to Prinsloo once the packaging is completed, a budget can be assigned by the department to LT King Pool to be refurbished. “This process is well underway and should be completed by the end of the finical year (30 June 2020),” he confirmed.

Other issues surrounding the maintenance of the green spaces around the pool were also discussed and will be addressed. Outstanding pool equipment, benches and other leisure furniture will also be installed within the coming months.
