FRIDAY, 21 February marked the 20th anniversary of International Mother Language Day, a global observance to sustain cultural and linguistic diversities officially declared by UNESCO.

Renowned Durban-based musician, Madala Kunene, graces the stage with his authentic and legendary sounds.

To mark this auspicious occasion, Under The Storytelling Tree hosted its first event this year celebrating all cultures in their diversities and languages. Hosted by eThekwini Living Legend, Dr Gcina Mhlophe, on Saturday, 22 February at the Bluff Showgrounds in true storytelling telling fashion, the event did not disappoint.

Guests had audiences engaged from the first word to the last. While all attendees were of importance, the  special guests were children who were also given preferential seating at the front to absorb and thoroughly enjoy the experience.

“If we don’t speak our languages, we forget our culture, because your language is a strict reminder to always respect your elders. Your language reminds you of your culture. So, we must always celebrate our languages in such a way that we remember where we come from, who we are and why we are so proud of saying our families’ praise names because again, they remind us of our ancestors, where we come from and how we ended up where we are, ” Dr Mhlophe said proudly.
