Sewage, stormwater drains cause extensive damage at Clairwood hotel

Speaking to the SUN, hotel owner, Rajen Bugwandeen, shed some light on the unpleasant experience he has been forced to endure at his hotel.

SEWAGE woes in Clairwood are proving to be a never-ending battle with the Moon Hotel on South Coast Road being the latest victim on the receiving end of the stink.

Speaking to the SUN, hotel owner, Rajen Bugwandeen shed some light on the unpleasant experience he has been forced to endure at his hotel on the corner Seaward and South Coast roads for as long as he can remember. “The sewage and stormwater drains are right next to each other outside the hotel and whenever there is heavy rains or faults with the sewers it all flows into the basement of my establishment. I suspect that there is a serious fault in the connection of the pipes beneath the road and it costing me severely,” he said following the recent extensive damage to his property following the heavy rains last week.

“I have reported the problem to the municipality countless times as well as informed ward 32 PR councillor, Sharmaine Sewshanker last week. No municipal workers attended to the latest report.”

As unfortunate as the incident may be, according to Bugwandeen this is nothing new. “Over the years, stormwater and sewage has seeped into the basement of the hotel where we used to have a lounge for the leisure of our residents at the hotel. We have since had to shut it down completely due to the flooding damage from blocked stormwater drains. The kitchen, boiler room and meter room are also flooded often after heavy rains. The walls have been damaged from the moisture and there is often an overflow of sewage on the road just before the entrance to the hotel. This has been a huge inconvenience, has disrupted the productivity of the establishment, affected neighbouring businesses and is a growing hygiene and health hazard. The issue of sewage leaks and blocked stormwater drains is nothing new to this area it is an ongoing occurrence but we cannot continue to live like this,” he said.

Sewshanker presented a thread of emails detailing her efforts to escalate the incident to eThekwini Municipality eServices as well as departmental heads of the Department of Water and Sanitation. The only response back was from eServices confirming that the fault had been captured on Thursday, 20 February. Attempts to contact eThekwini Municipality for comment proved unsuccessful by the time of going to print.
