City gears up for possible flooding after heavy rains

Between 60 to 70 mm of rainfall has been recorded so far.

FOLLOWING heavy downpours, which began on Tuesday, 18 February, the mayor of eThekwini Municipality, councillor Mxolisi Kaunda, has ordered disaster management teams to be on high alert.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), rains expected to hit the city have to-date been recorded between 60 to 70 mm, a recipe for localised flooding.

The wet weather is expected to clear today, Thursday, 20 February, with 30 per cent chance of downpours in the afternoon.

“The situation warrants that our disaster management teams must ready themselves to respond with speed in the event their services are required anywhere in the city.”

“We are also calling upon the public to work with us by heeding our warnings. Everyone should unwaveringly be mindful that we are a city that is prone to disasters largely caused by heavy rains.”

“The truth is that we would only minimise the negative impact of disasters only when we work together. The public must not hesitate to call our call centre in the event they need our help. Their welfare comes first and under no circumstances shall we put their lives at risk,” said councillor Kaunda.

The city further urged motorists to drive with caution as roads are extremely slippery and should allow officers to perform their pointsmen duties where traffic lights are not working.

Residents residing in flood susceptible areas are urged to be ultra-cautious. In the event of a disaster, call 031-361-0000.
