BRIGHTON Beach police have embarked on several proactive awareness campaigns to set the tone for creating safer schools in 2020.

Brighton Beach police communications officer, Captain Louise le Roux, hosted several activities at various local schools to empower and educate children on their various rights and responsibilities to ensure their safety and take the necessary precautions.

Le Roux also held her ‘Captain Lollipop’ one-woman road show on child trafficking awareness for Grade R – 7 learners. The children were taught about the threats that strangers pose on children’s safety and their well-being after they have been taken. Le Roux demonstrated the way in which children are lured with money, novelties, treats and other manners of deception. Learners were also taught self-defence techniques to fight off any person who grabs them.

“Many Grade R learners are not yet conversant with the English language as the academic year has only just commenced. To ensure the inclusion of these little ones, I have included isiZulu phrases to accompany the visual aids that I have created, to ensure that the initiative is educational and inclusive for all learners,” said Le Roux.
To date, 1 096 learners have attended the child trafficking awareness presentation. The project will continue during February to ensure that all schools within the policing area have been visited.
