PICTURES: Kavady festival turns Merebank vibrant with colour

HUNDREDS of devotees gathered at the Punjab Circle in Merebank to observe Thaipoosam Kavady on Saturday, 8 February. The one-day annual festival usually falls in January or at the start of February.

Celebrating two important events in Hindu mythology – the anniversary of Lord Murugan receiving the Vel from his mother, Goddess Parvati and the day God Shiva danced the anandatandava and revealed His form of Nataraja to the devas, sages, and priests who had gathered at the hallowed Shiva temple of Chidambaram in Tamilnadu.
