WCC kicks off cycling season

Wenties Cycling Club is currently hard at work preparing for the Maluti Double 90 which will be held in Clarens.

WENTIES Cycling Club’s (WCC) young and old are set to take on 2020 by fire and by force as they train for their most exciting cycling season yet.

WCC officially started in 2014 and initially began as a mountain bike social initiative between a brotherhood in an effort to motivate one another to live a healthy lifestyle. “Thereafter the group started growing with more members joining the club and became more competitive,” said WCC chairman, Roderick Whiteman.

Wenties Cycling Club’s Malcolm Sookol eases into his Saturday morning training.

The members began taking their training seriously and entered races in and around Durban such as the AmaShova Durban Classic, where two of their members won third position on the tandem last year. They are currently hard at work preparing for the Maluti Double 90 which will be held in Clarens, situated in the Eastern Free State Highlands, on the northern most point of Lesotho. The Maluti Double 90 is a team time trial cycling race over 180 km. The event takes place on Saturday, 18 April 2020 and is limited to 120 teams. Teams can enter up to 12 riders per team, with the time of the sixth rider across the finish line being taken as the official team time.

WCC’s Sabrina Ellapen and Vernon Wildey.

Club member Ricardo Persadh who has participated in the race before, said the Maluti is both tough and demanding from pre-race training right through to the grueling finish line “We’re hoping to take a strong team into this race. This is going to be team effort, we’re going to help each other from the start all the way through the course and right to the finish,” said an excited Ricardo, who also done the PE to Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Wenties Cycling Club’s Mark Kruger swiftly takes the lead.

WCC thanks its sponsor, Tyron Coppman from Merlon Group for his support as well as supplying them with their kits for three years. Anyone who wishes to join the club can contact Roderick Whiteman on 083-789-3647 or Keith 083-614-9155 or Ashley Dove on 083-461-5081.
