Flag hoisting ceremony to continue at Clairwood temple

Devotees of the Clairwood Shree Siva Soobramomiar Temple can be rest assured that the Thaipusam Kavady flag hoisting scheduled for tonight at 5.30pm will go ahead as planned.

DEVOTEES of the Clairwood Shree Siva Soobramomiar Temple can be rest assured that the Thaipusam Kavady flag hoisting scheduled for tonight at 5.30pm will go ahead as planned.

This confirmation was received from one of the temple’s trustees Ricky Naidoo who said he has been inundated with phone calls regarding the fire that started at a warehouse next to the temple. “The fire started at the warehouse and did spread to our premises, however, there is no damage to the temple as such. It was the storage room in our dining hall that suffered minimal damage to the roof in the ordeal and there is also some smoke damage to the hall and feeding area but it is not extensive. We will still be hosting our Thaipusam Kavady ceremony as normal commencing this evening and up until 9 February  where we expect thousands of devotees to attend,” said Naidoo.

The temple recently celebrated 130 years and is a prime religious monument for the local Hindu community and assures the surrounding community that all is in order.

Ward 32 PR ward councillor Sharmaine Sewshanker together with the Safety, Emergency and Security Committee will be visiting the warehouse that caught alight and will walk along Sirdar Road on Friday,  31 January, to conduct an oversight visit, in a proactive approach to tackle this issue of unregulated business posing a safety threat to the community and the historic heritage sites like the Clairwood Shree Siva Soobramomiar Temple.
